Homemade Brownies in a Jar Mix - My Favourite Recipe (1)

This is my favourite brownies in a jar recipe. It makes amazingly rich and chocolatey brownies with a divine gooey middle. They never last long out of the oven!

Most people love chocolate and it's hard to go wrong gifting a jar of brownie mix! These jars are quick and easy to assemble, and great to give at Christmas or as teacher-appreciation gifts (and do keep a jar for yourself too!!).

In the immortal words of Linda Greyson,

"There's nothing better than a good friend,
except a good friend with chocolate."

Brownies in a Jar: 500g version

Since having my son I've attended a lovely Mothers' group. Each week we get together and do craft or cooking while the little ones are in creche. This week we're making Brownies in a Jar for everyone to take home, so I thought I'd share the recipe here too.

I've adapted a recipe to fit a smaller 500g jar, and I'm also sharing the sheet of labels for printing out (great if you want to make several jars!). I live in the UK so all the measurements are in metric, but hopefully they'll still be useful to some of our readers :)

If you want a bigger version, look down the page for our 1 quart jar instructions.

Jar Assembly

Into a clean 500g glass jar layer:

  • 20g plain flour
  • 30g cocoa powder
  • 250g sugar, either white or brown works, or use a combination of both (this works really well if you want to add more colored layers)
  • 125g chocolate cut into pieces (or use chocolate chips)

I usuallysplit the sugar and cocoa into separate layersso that there are more layers.

Then place all the chocolate at the top of the jar. As it's chunky, the finer ingredients will trickle through if you place it further down and it won't look as pretty.

Jar Labels

Now you've got your filled jars, you need to add a label with the baking instructions. Here are the labels we used at our Mothers' group. As Christmas is approaching I've made one label with a Christmas paper background, and the other I've used a sweet spring rose pattern, so hopefully more versatile for all year around gifts.

Print the labels onto thick paper or card-stock (I'm using 160gsm) or you can even use matte photo paper. These printables are for personal, non-commercial use only. Cut out the labels and attach to the front and lid of your jar using double-sided tape. Leave as is or embellish with a ribbon.

Baking Instructions

As we're using 500g jars, the batch of brownies you make will be a modest size. Your recipient will need to use a lined 1lb loaf tin or other small baking tin rather than the usual square brownies tin.

To make, pour contents of the jar into a mixing bowl. Add 125g melted butter, 1tsp vanilla essence, and 2 eggs lightly beaten. (Optional: add a cup of chopped nuts). Mix to combine and pour into the tin. Bake at 160 degrees/Gas 3 for 40 minutes or so.

So simple, and they are *delicious*. Enjoy!

How to make Brownies in a Jar: 1 quart jar

This recipe is the same as the one for mydecadent brownies, but scaled down so that the ingredients fit perfectly into a 1 quart jar.

Ingredients(to fill a 1 quart/1L jar)

  • 1 1/2 cups (300g) brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 3/4 cup (90g) plain flour
  • 3/4 cup (90g) cocoa powder (unsweetened)
  • 3/4 cup (80g) chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup (approximately 60g) chocolate chips or chunks

Variations:Replace the walnuts with other nuts like almonds or pecans, or use a combination. You could also add raisins to the mix.

Method for Preparing Brownies in a Jar MixHomemade Brownies in a Jar Mix - My Favourite Recipe (6)

  1. Measure out the ingredients separately.
  2. Layer ingredients into your jar, putting finer ingredients towards the bottom.

Here I have put cocoa, flour, brown sugar, walnuts, and chocolate. I think it would work even better breaking up the sugar layer. Have fun experimenting!

Just remember that the finer ingredients will fall through the gaps of the chunkier ingredients. That's why I always put the chunkier ingredients towards the top of the jar.

Storage: so long as the jar is air-tight, the brownie mix will last as long as any of the individual ingredients (just look on the packaging), which is normally a couple of months.

FAQs

Is it cheaper to buy brownie mix or make from scratch? ›

It was about three times more expensive to make the brownies from scratch than to use a mix, owing mostly to the cost of chocolate and walnuts. I spent about $4.25 on the Pillsbury mix plus added ingredients, versus $13.50 for the homemade batch.

How to doctor up brownie mix? ›

The first and easiest upgrade you can give to your boxed brownie mix is to add a tablespoon of instant coffee to the batter. Adding coffee to your brownies boosts their flavor because its bitter quality balances out sweetness, making it less overpowering. It allows that delicious chocolate flavor to really shine.

What does adding milk instead of water do to brownies? ›

One change is to use milk or heavy cream instead of water. This change will make brownies more moist and gooey since milk is more fatty and flavorful than water. A second change is to use butter instead of oil. For similar reasons to using milk, butter adds a rich and more decadent quality to the batter.

How long can you keep brownies in a jar? ›

Brownies will last 3 to 4 days in an airtight container at room temperature and up to a week in the refrigerator. Brownies will last up to 3 months in the freezer, but if they stay frozen for a prolonged period of time, their taste and quality will begin to deteriorate.

When you want a delicious brownie for a baking emergency—or just to treat yourself—look no further than a box of Ghirardelli Double Chocolate Brownies. These fudgy brownies were packed with that Ghirardelli chocolate flavor that so many of us love.

Why do homemade brownies taste different? ›

Most boxed mixes call for vegetable oil, which gives brownies a lighter texture and more neutral flavor. To make them taste homemade, try substituting equal amounts of melted butter for the oil. This is my number one tip because the butter will add a richness both in flavor and texture.

What happens if you add an extra egg to brownie mix? ›

If you want to get a little more creative with your brownie mix hacks, add an extra egg to the batter. The extra protein will help thicken up the batter and make it fluffier, creating a more decadent, fudgy texture. You can also add the yolk by itself in addition to the 2 eggs a box brownie mix typically calls for.

Add nuts – Add a handful of finely chopped pecans or walnuts if you love brownies with nuts. Add mix ins – Jazz up a basic brownie mix with chopped mini peanut butter cups, white chocolate chunks, or your favorite chopped up candy bar. Add a swirl – Swirl in spoonfuls of peanut butter or Nutella before baking.

Making Brownie Batter in Advance

the butter brownies actually had a fudgier texture. they were softer, and they really just melted in your mouth. they also had that shiny crust and just better flavor, whereas the oil brownies were actually chewier.

What oil is best for brownies? ›

Most brownie recipes call for some kind of oil — usually vegetable oil or canola oil. This oil acts as the primary fat in brownie batter, giving it that delicious, fudgy texture we all know and love.

Can I use butter instead of oil in brownie mix? ›

You can absolutely substitute butter for the vegetable oil. Use the same quantity specified in the directions (for example, if it calls for 1/3 cup of oil, use 5 1/3 tablespoons of butter). Melt it down, then let it cool a bit. You might not ever go back to oil!

Are homemade brownies better than store-bought? ›

The only difference is the intensity of the chocolate and overall richness. For my recipe, it has a slightly deeper chocolate flavor due to the use of both real chocolate and cocoa powder. My brownies also have that same airy quality to them as box mix brownies, but with a more dense texture.

Is it Worth Home-Baking Anymore? Turns out, whilst baking from scratch at home is still cheaper than buying a cake from a professional bakery, it would actually be cheaper to Fake Bake. You don't need to turn on the oven, saving you on energy.
