Choosing Classes at Chemeketa

Here’s what you need to know about choosing classes at Chemeketa.

At Chemeketa, students can choose from a variety of class formats to achieve their education goals. Here is a list of class delivery formats available to choose from:

• In-Person classes are coded IN, which means you attend class in a traditional classroom at a Chemeketa campus or outreach center.
• Online classes are coded OL, which means you attend class online by logging into Canvas frequently to complete assignments and check messages from your instructor. There is no set meeting time for an online class. However, you may be required to take proctored exams on campus.
• Remote classes are coded RM, which means you attend class by logging into a Zoom web session in real-time. You will also be expected to log into Canvas regularly to complete assignments and check messages from your instructor.
• Combined formats. In these classes you attend class in a blend of two course delivery formats. These classes can be offered in a variety of combinations, In-Person and Remote, In-Person and Online, and Remote and Online.

Using Technology

Here’s what you need to know about using technology.

Having access to a reliable computer along with access to a fast, dependable Internet connection, will be essential. Other technology requirements are likely to vary by class.

Remote courses use Zoom to meet during their scheduled class times. Having some basic computer skills and knowledge will make things easier for you.

Canvas is the learning management system at Chemeketa used to access all of your courses. If you are new to using Canvas, or just want to see what a typical online class looks like, take the Canvas Course Tour.

The Canvas Student App helps you stay informed on course work, up-do-date on grades and feedback, and connected with classmates. The app provides students with a convenient way to access their Canvas courses on the go.

While mobile devices can be useful for accessing course materials on the go, a computer is typically a better choice for students who need to participate in remote or online classes for an extended period of time.

Being Successful

Here’s what you need to know about being successful.

Communication skills are critical in both academic and professional settings. Effective communication is essential to convey your ideas and thoughts clearly, and it can help you build positive relationships with your peers and instructors. These communication skills include but are not limited to writing, speaking, and reading.

Writing skills - writing will be a primary way you will be communicating with your instructor and classmates as well as completing assignments.

Speaking skills - speaking will also be important for your success in eLearning, especially in remote courses. You will often be encouraged by your instructor to turn on your camera and participate in class discussions.

Reading skills - additionally, having strong reading skills will be necessary for your success in eLearning courses as the majority of the communication of course content, assignments, and expectations are in written form.

Study Skills

Developing good study habits is essential for achieving academic success. Managing time and avoiding distractions during class can be challenging, but there are several strategies that you can use to make the most of your time and stay focused.

Here are some tips:

• Create a study schedule that works for you. Allocate time for each subject, and stick to the schedule as much as possible. Plan to spend anywhere from 9-12 hours per week on each class.
• Set goals that are challenging yet achievable. Goals give you something to work towards and help you stay motivated. Break larger goals into smaller, manageable ones, and celebrate your achievements along the way.
• Get organized. Use folders, binders, or digital tools to keep your notes organized and easy to access.
• Prioritize your tasks based on importance and urgency. Make sure you complete the most important tasks first and avoid procrastination.
• Find a quiet place to study free from distractions like social media, TV, or noisy roommates. Leave your phone in another room to avoid distractions.
